Production starts
on the Staging Ground.
Mental models for engineers modernizing real systems. We train working engineers to see the system behind the ticket: legacy CI/CD, GitOps, and the messy middle between them.
01 // who we help
Teams Working in the Middle
Most engineers don't work on brand-new systems or ancient ones. They work in between, and almost nobody teaches the in-between.
Enterprise Teams
Organizations modernizing legacy systems while keeping production running, and needing engineers who understand both the old world and the new one.
Engineering Leaders & L&D
Managers and learning leads who need training that changes how engineers work on Monday, not a certificate that changes nothing.
Engineers Ready to Level Up
Support, operations, and DevOps engineers a few years in, ready to move from closing tickets to reading systems.
02 // why this matters
Engineers Aren't Short on Tools. They're Short on Understanding.
Teams run old and new pipelines side by side for months or years. Someone has to understand both. We teach the middle. We don't teach tools; we build mental models, so engineers can see the system behind every ticket.
85%
of engineers on primarily legacy systems spend at least 30% of their week on maintenance.1
69%
of technical professionals expect the legacy-to-modern skills gap to grow over the next 2–3 years.1
44%
of federal agency leaders name the workforce skills gap as their top barrier to modernization.2

03 // what we do
Training First. Capability That Stays.
Every engagement is built to grow your team's engineering capability, not create a dependency on ours.
SVC.01
Enterprise Training
Instructor-led workshops for engineering teams, live on-site or remote. CI/CD, GitOps, Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, observability, and production readiness.
SVC.02
Custom Curriculum & Labs
Courses and hands-on lab environments designed around your stack, your constraints, and your team's level. Your team keeps the materials.
SVC.03
Pipeline Reviews & Coaching
An outside read on your delivery pipelines and modernization plan, plus coaching for the engineers who will own them after we leave.
04 // how we teach
We Don't Teach Software. We Teach Engineers.
The goal isn't memorizing commands. It's understanding that transfers across tools, teams, and career stages.
Mental Models First
Every module opens with a model of how the system behaves, then proves it in a lab. Tools change every few years. The model transfers.
Modular by Design
Two-hour modules, each with a hands-on lab. Combine them into full-day or half-day sessions that fit your team's calendar.
Labs That Build on Each Other
In multi-day courses, labs build toward one capstone, with checkpoint repos so anyone who falls behind can rejoin without starting over.
Built for the Messy Middle
Legacy CI/CD, GitOps, and the migrations in between, taught inside real enterprise constraints: compliance, change management, and systems you can't turn off.
05 // how we work
From First Call to Lasting Capability
Discovery
We learn your systems, your team's starting point, your constraints, and what success looks like.
Design
We map modules and labs to your environment, so the examples look like the work your engineers actually do.
Delivery
Instructor-led sessions with live labs. Engineers break things on purpose in a safe place, then fix them.
Transfer
Slides, lab repos, and guides become your team's study materials. Your team owns the outcome.
06 // why staging ground
Why Teams Choose Us
Production Experience
We've built and operated production systems across government, automotive, energy, and enterprise platforms. Every lab comes from real operational experience, not theory.
Principles Over Tools
Tools change. Platforms evolve. The principles that make systems reliable, maintainable, and understandable stay the same. That's what we teach.
Enterprise Context
Enterprise environments have real constraints: compliance, legacy systems, change management, and organizational complexity. Our training respects them.
Knowledge That Stays
Every engagement is designed to leave your team stronger. We build capability that stays when we leave.
07 // engineering principles
Technology Changes. Engineering Principles Endure.
A ticket is a symptom of a system.
Automation should remove repetition, not understanding.
Documentation is operational empathy.
Design for the engineer who inherits your system.
Knowledge trapped in one engineer is organizational risk.
Build people. The technology will follow.
08 // about
Where Engineers Rehearse Before Production
In software, staging is where you rehearse before production. Staging Ground is that place for engineers: hands-on labs where teams practice on real-shaped systems before the stakes are real.
Staging Ground was founded by Dwayne Pugh, a systems engineer and technical educator with more than a decade in production across government, automotive technology, critical infrastructure, and enterprise platforms.
He started on the help desk, closing tickets. The jump to Tier 2 production support taught him the lesson this company is built on: a ticket is a symptom of a system. The strongest engineers don't know more tools. They ask one more question: what else touches this, and when?
